How easy is it?Applying Microtopping is not like other products where what you get is what comes out of the tin. The final look is achieved purely by the skill of the applicator. There are easy aspects of creating a Microtopping floor and there are aspects that are tricky. Easy things include mixing the components together, simply follow the instruction sheet available from our office. Applying the material to the floor is relatively easy and anybody competent in using a trowel will have the necessary dexterity. The challenge is to achieve the desired aesthetic. This is done through the interaction between the layers so you need to understand what the lower layers will look like once they have been partly covered by the upper layers. The troweling marks in both the base coats and the finish coats are affected by the angle of the trowel, the length of the strokes, the type of trowel used and the pressure applied. Subtle differences will affect the final look. Also, the amount each layer is sanded affects the final aesthetic too.
Some of these differing techniques are shown in the videos |
below, but there is no substitute for experience. All the applicators you see in the videos, whether our own staff or the independent contractors, are experts.
VideosThe videos below show you the basic techniques including mixing, applying the material and creating different colours, variegation and texture. There is a video about us which also gives an overview of products and systems other than Microtopping which we manufacture. There is a video about our training courses too. There are also some videos which have been made by some of our Microtopping contractor-customers. Their contact details are, of course, available by searching for them online or by contacting us.
